Production: The basil plant is native to India. It is a herb with silky green leaves and white blossoms that is part of the mint family.

Qualities: Basil has a strong, sweet, aroma and flavor, sometimes compared to anise or mint. It is most recognized for its role in Italian cuisine, as well as in Southeast Asian dishes. The dried leaves have a much more mild flavor than the fresh plant.

Common Use: The dried herb can be used liberally in many recipes, like pastas, meat dishes, soups and sauces such as constituting the main ingredient in pesto sauce.
